Why Is This Day js celebrated?

The holiday commemorates the martyrdom of St. Valentine, an early Christian martyr, on February 14, 269 AD.

During the time of Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD, he was a priest and bishop in Rome.

Claudius II, the Roman emperor, is alleged to have put St. Valentine in prison for betrayal and refusing to stop performing Christian marriages.

During his friendship with Claudius, St. Valentine had attempted to convert the emperor to Christianity but was sentenced to death for it.

Claudius’ daughter was miraculously cured of blindness by St. Valentine, who wrote letters to her.

From your Valentine

The emperor’s daughter received Valentine’s last letter, signed ‘from your Valentine’ before he was killed.

St. Valentine became an icon of love and romance in the later middle ages, between 1000 and 1250 AD.

At the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome, you can see the flower-crowned skull of St. Valentine. Other remains of his body can be found at Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland.

From the final letter that he wrote to the emperor’s daughter, the tradition of anonymous letters, poems, and cards was born.
